A Century of Synthetic Fertilizer: 1909-2009 Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
This year marks a centenary of the synthetic fertilizer industry. German chemists, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, in 1909 demonstrated their industrial process for the manufacture of ammonia. The achievement won them accolades including Nobel Prizes. The output of their Haber-Bosch process can be used for either peace or war, agriculture or munitions, and the rapid adoption by Germany of this industrial process is credited with prolonging WW1. Most of the synthetic nitrogenous fertilizer of the past century, and right up to the present, has been manufactured using the Haber-Bosch process. The use of synthetic fertilizers has led to significant negative environmental outcomes. Rudolf Steiner was an early voice against chemical agriculture. Steiner's...

A comparison of energy use in organic and conventional agriculture in Spain Organic Eprints
Alonso, Antonio M.; González, Rodrigo; Foraster, Laia; Guzmán, Gloria I.; García, Roberto.
The current situation of worldwide concern over the emission of greenhouse gases and its effect on the climate demands an evaluation, from the perspective of energy efficiency and more specifically of non-renewable energy sources, of tendencies for change in the management of agricultural systems that have arisen in recent years. This article uses energy balances to evaluate the contribution of organic agriculture to the increase in the energy efficiency of Spanish agriculture. The results show the higher nonrenewable energy efficiency (NREE) and the lower use of nonrenewable energy (NRE) in organic systems compared with conventional ones. Nevertheless, agricultural systems in general could still improve their energy efficiency.

A controversy re-visited: Is the coccinellid Adalia bipunctata adversely affected by Bt toxins? Organic Eprints
Hilbeck, Angelika; Mc Millan, Johanna M.; Meier, Matthias; Humbel, Anna; Schläpfer-Miller, Juanita; Trtikova, Miluse.
Background: In 2008/2009, Schmidt and colleagues published a study reporting lethal effects of the microbial Bt toxins Cry1Ab and Cry3Bb on the coccinellid biological control organisms Adalia bipunctata. Based on this study, in concert with over 30 other publications, Mon810 cultivation was banned in Germany in 2009. This triggered two commentaries and one experimental study all published in the journal ‘Transgenic Research’ that question the scientific basis of the German ban or claim to disprove the adverse effects of the Bt toxins on A. bipunctata reported by Schmidt and colleagues, respectively. This study was undertaken to investigate the underlying reasons for the different outcomes and rebuts the criticism voiced by the two other commentaries....

A method to include machine manufacturing energy in energy balance analysis Organic Eprints
Ahokas, J.; Mikkola, H..
Manufacturing and also maintenance and repair energy demand is hard to find, there are only few research data available and this data seems no to be very reliable. Manufacturing energy damand can be calculated by estimating the mean tractor usage and calculating the manufacturing energy per consumed fuel liter. In this way it is easy to estimate the manufacturing energy, because it can be calculated with the liter/ha figures. Fuel consumption for different works in the form of liter/ha can easily be found in literature.

A modelling framework for assessing adaptive management options of Finnish agricultural systems to climate change Organic Eprints
Rötter, R.; Lehtonen, H.; Palosuo, T.; Salo, T.; Helin , J.; Kahiluoto, H.; Aakkula, J.; Granlund, K.; Rankinen, K.; Carter, T..
Agrifood systems need to adapt to cope with the risks and opportunities related to global changes in climate, markets and policies. The impacts of these changes on food production, the environment and farmer livelihoods, as well as those of changes to technology and management practices, are not clearly understood. There is a need for improved assessment methods and tools that consider multiple factor and scale interactions (Van Ittersum et al., 2008). In recent years, European-wide consortia, such as SEAMLESS, have worked for creating flexible and widely applicable frameworks for integrated assessment and and modelling of agrifood systems That work has been valuable in developing common concepts, methods and more flexible frameworks (Ewert et al.,...

A modelling framework for assessing adaptive management options of Finnish agrifood systems to global change Organic Eprints
Rötter, R.P.; Lehtonen, H.; Kahiluoto, H.; Palosuo, T.; Aakkula, J.; Salo, T.; Helenius, J.; Helin, J.; Granlund, K.; Rankinen, K.; Carter, T..
The AGRISIMU-project represents a novel approach to integrate data and output from several existing models. While sector models linking agricultural policy, economics and land use have long existed, a spatially explicit treatment of the interactions between land use and impacts on nutrient flows, biodiversity and climate change has not yet been attempted.

A note on the environmental costs of aggregates AgEcon
Berck, Peter.
The opening of a new site for the production of aggregates has both direct and indirect impacts on the environment. The indirect impacts include changes in the environmental costs of hauling aggregates and possible changes in the level of construction activity. In this note, we show that the most likely effect of a new aggregate site is to reduce the truck miles used for aggregate hauling, which is an environmental benefit. We also show that the change in construction activity induced by a new site is likely to be extremely small.

A PRACTICE APPLICABLE MODEL FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF MANAGEMENT IMPACT ON ORGANIC MATTER IN ARABLE SOILS Organic Eprints
Brock, Christopher; Leithold, Günter.
We present the HU-MOD-2 model for the assessment of management impact on organic matter levels in arable soils. The model aims at optimal applicability as a management support tool in framing practice and therefore requires only easily available input data. In validation, the tool proved to be capable of giving a rough estimate on soil organic matter changes in arable soils. Taking into account the low demand for input data, the modeling error seems tolerable for a practice applicable decision support tool.

Organic Eprints
Nascimento, Humberto Miranda do.

Nauta, Wytze J.; Cuijpers, Willemijn J.M.; Staps, J.J.M.; Scholberg, Johannes.
